Frequently asked questions.

Can we write our own vows?

Absolutely! I love it when couples write their own vows – it’s such a personal and powerful moment. If you’d like to, I have a simple guide to help with structure. Once you’ve written them, just email them over to me so I can do a little “vibe and length” check (so they balance nicely). And don’t worry – I’ll also print them for you on the day.

Can we include religious or cultural aspects?

Yes please – I love this. Maybe you’re not religious enough for a fully religious wedding, but you want to weave in those little nods to your heritage. From Corinthians 13, to breaking the glass (*Mazel Tov!*), to a Celtic handfasting – I welcome it all, and I have experience with lots of different traditions. And if it’s something I haven’t seen before, I’d be excited to learn. If it matters to you, let’s talk about how we can make it part of your ceremony.

I feel a bit nervous and self-conscious about the ceremony… help!

Don’t worry – you’re in the right place! My job is to make this feel good for you. If walking down the aisle makes you nervous, we can switch it up – maybe have a “first look” beforehand, or walk down together, or even skip the aisle moment completely. If standing at the front feels scary, how about sitting with a drink in hand, feeling relaxed and right there with your loved ones? There are so many ways to do this. We’ll curate it so it feels doable, comfortable, and totally you!

So you can’t marry us legally?

Not quite. Right now, celebrants in England can’t conduct the legal bit. Most couples “do the paperwork” at the registry office a few days before or after. It’s quick, simple, and costs between £35 - £70 (£68.50 for the statutory room in Bristol City Council Registry Office). Then, you save your big promises, your story, your celebration for your celebrant-led ceremony.

What happens if you can’t make the day?

This is very rare, but if unforeseen circumstances came up, I’d be in touch straight away. I’d then work with my trusted network of celebrants (through the Academy of Modern Celebrants and beyond) to find the right replacement. If, for any reason, that wasn’t possible, you’d receive your complete, finished script with clear instructions. I’d also brief whoever is stepping in, so you’re never left in the lurch.

How long does a celebrant ceremony usually last?

Most are around 25–40 minutes. Long enough to tell your story, laugh, cry and celebrate – but not so long that your guests get restless.

Do you travel?

Yes, absolutely! I’m based in Bristol but very happy to travel further afield. If there are any extra travel costs, we’ll chat about that upfront. I also do destination weddings and travel abroad to celebrate you on your big day!

What’s the difference between a registrar and a celebrant?

Registrars do the legal paperwork and have to stick to a set script. A celebrant creates something personal, flexible, and full of your story. Most couples do a quick legal signing at the register office, then save the real magic (rings exchange, vows, announcing in front of friends and family) for their celebrant-led day.

Can we include children, pets, or family members?

Yes, yes, and yes! Whether it’s kids reading, your dog trotting down the aisle, or nan being part of the action – I love weaving in the people (and pets!) that matter most to you.

Do we get to see the script before the day?

Of course – you’ll see a full draft and we’ll tweak it together until you’re happy. Nothing goes in that you’re not comfortable with.

Can we add readings, music, or symbolic rituals?

Absolutely – it’s your day! Handfastings, sand ceremonies, tree plantings, poems, live music – you name it, we can include it.

What if we’re not very “soppy”?

Perfect! Your ceremony doesn’t have to be super romantic if that’s not you. We can make it funny, relaxed, real, or a mix of all three.

How do we book you?

Easy – once you’ve decided I’m the right fit, I’ll send you a booking form, a contract and deposit details to secure your date. Then we dive into the fun part: creating your perfect ceremony!

I have a few more questions…

Love it. The best thing to do is get in touch and we can chat through all your quezzies!
